      In the middle of the XVIth century Magdeburg’s cantor Gallus Dressler, successor of Martin Agricola, fixes with a remarkable clarity the usual modal theory of polyphonists. Faced with the innovation advocated by the great Swiss theorist Glarean (twelve modes renewed of Antique), he delivers an eloquent testimony of the basic education given to young singers towards 1560.
