This new edition rests on the manuscript autograph of 1723 of Jean-Sebastien Bach preserved at Deutsche Staatsbibliothek of Berlin. This handwritten version represented certainly for the author the state of completion of work. It is known however that there is a primitive version for the inventions. These parts appear under the titles of "Praembula and Fantasiae" in the Small Book of the Keyboard (Klavierbüchlein-1720) that J.S. Bach had intended for the musical education of his son Wilhelm Friedmann. In 1723, it joins together them in a collection which it names "Inventions and Sinfonies" more commonly called "Inventions with two and three voices".
