E-SCORE PDF VERSION
Modern Blues is a single movement work with two themes. The first applies the principles of contrasting sounds, announcing seventh degree dissonances in contrasted registers, before gradually giving way to a dialogue between the alto and the piano which is heightened through pizzicato chords, tremolos, and glissando in the alto.
The second theme softens the atmosphere, with a more melodious character while leaving ample room for moderately virtuosic climaxes. Finally, a somewhat melancholic coda completes the work, and the alto is left almost alone, with the occasional echo from the piano in different registers.
