This quartet for saxophones (S-A-T-Bar) toggles between several ways of composing. Some passages are straightly measured, melodic, or harmonic, and others are like cues in theater. In this passages, every musician has to read and listen what are the others playing and to take is place at the right moment. To play well demands a great attention and involvement. None is sure of what will be the result of performance. After the first third of the piece the writing of the music is more traditionnal (but is never a tonal one ...) About the timbre, the quartett has been written in many passages like one instrument. So one can hear a compact coherence of sound. Mâcles is not for beginners, but not so difficult, there are no high technical difficulties.
