Inspired to its composer by different music styles of the south of the U.S.A (blues, country, spirituals…), DEEP SOUTH is a jazz piece composed first for brass quintet, and transcribed here for saxophone quintet (soprano, alto, tenor 1 & 2, and barytone saxophones). The “funky” AABA theme is followed by written “choruses” which run in 16 bars sections, so that each musician can play a solo part. A tutti “stop chorus”, first in unison, then polyphonic, precedes the last exposition of the theme.
