FALCINELLI Rolande

ROLANDE FALCINELLI was born in 1920. She entered the Paris Conservatory in 1932, where she studied Notation, Counterpoint and Fugue with Simone Plé-Caussade and Composition with Henri Büsser. After studying the piano with Isidor Philipp, she took organ lessons from Gaston Litaize before joining Marcel Dupré’s Organ and Improvisation class, in which she won a First Prize in 1942.

The same year, she won Second Prize in the Prix de Rome in Composition [a competition for young composers, where the winners were awarded a year’s study in Rome].

She was Organist of the Sacré Coeur (the Basilica of the Sacred Heart), in Montmartre, from 1946 until 1973.

She taught the organ at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau from 1948 to 1955, and at the École Normale de Musique [a famous music college] in Paris from 1951 to 1955.

In 1955, she succeeded Marcel Dupré at the Paris Conservatory, where she held the Professorship of Organ and Improvisation until 1986. Many of her pupils have gone on to become brilliant organists.
