René Maillard (1931) started his musical studies with the violin and the viola. He received first prizes in harmony, counterpoint and fugue at the Conservatoire National Superieur of Paris in the classes of Marcel Samuel-Rousseau and Noël Gallon. He studied composition with Tony Aubin and was awarded the Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1955.
This period of his life was intensely creative: 2 concertos da camera for strings, several sonates for various instruments, one quintette à vent, 4 poems for choir and orchestra, one trio for strings, several pieces for ballets, several melodies, in all some 17 opuses, mostly plublished by Delatour France.
In 1957, hired by E.M.I. as directeur artisique he works with Villa Lobos, Samson François, Paul Tortelier among others. In 1960 he composed the concerto da camera n°2 created at the Festival dAix-en Provence conducted by Serge Baudo.
In 1961 he wrote a concerto grosso for wind quintet and string orchestra. (commissioned by the French Ministère de la Culture). In 1962, discouraged, refusing a musical trends that he found unacceptable and, unwilling to compromise, he left music to put his energies elsewhere. His drive led him to a successful career as an executive in the pharmaceutical industry In 2002, after an interruption of 40 years, encouraged by Nicolas Bacri, he returned to music first with a sonata for alto and piano, soon followed by several pieces of chamber music.
After Serge Baudo, Jean Hubeau, Gérard Devos, Louis de Froment and other artists, a new generation of musicians is now discovering René Maillards music, which, in the French Tradition, is full of clearness and pure sensitivity.
