OUZOUNOFF Alexandre

Thanks to the influence of Alexandre Ouzounoff, many contemporary composers have written for the bassoon thus enriching the instrument’s repertory. In 1985, with grant from the Ministry of Culture, Alexandre Ouzounoff published a method on new styles of playing Actuellement, le Basson (Editions Salabert).

Through his international tours (Poland, Korea, Hungary, Germany, U.S.A., Italy) and master classes, he introduced young bassoonists to different modes of interpretation (Taira, Constant, Dao, Miereanu, Hersant, Monnet, Decoust, Solal, Dufourt, Scelsi, etc.). He participated in the recording of several signature albums (Fénelon, Dusapin, Méfano, Guezec, …) an experience which drew him into composition.

He received several commissions, produced many transcriptions and arrangements, and in 1998 won the1st Prize in the Concours International de Composition St Jacques de Compostelle for his work Ultreia written for Wind Orchestra.

Between 2002 and 2007 Alexandre Ouzounoff composed several works (Jaka; Abanicco; Roques and Roll) which were performed by Bande de Hautbois, an ensemble directed by the oboist C. Villevieille. In 2008 he wrote two volumes of a study on new concepts of composition for the bassoon in the 20th century (Editions Billaudot).
