Francis Chapelet studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won a First Prize for Harmony, studying under Maurice Duruflé, as well as First Prizes for Organ and Improvisation. For twenty years, he was one of the organists of the church of St Séverin in Paris, where he is still Organist Emeritus. He was a member of the two Ministry of Culture commissions on the care of organs. He is also Honorary Organist of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome.
He set up the organ course at the Conservatoire in Bordeaux and directed it until 1996. Francis Chapelet is well known as a specialist in Spanish organ music and was the director of the Castilian International Academy of the Iberian Organ. He is also a Corresponding Member of the Academy of the Fine Arts in Madrid.
He is an international concert artist whose talent for improvisation is recognised world-wide.
