CARAT Benjamin

Benjamin Carat is a French cellist (born in 1975) known for his commitment to contemporary music, his pedagogical creativity and his interest in instrumental research. After studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, he completed his doctoral studies in 20th century musicology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales / IRCAM in Paris in 1998, and wrote his Diplôme d’Etudes Appliquées dissertation on «The new relationship between performer and instrument in works for cello requiring an electronic device».

He then explored the music of today throughout the world as a soloist in residence at the Centre National de Création Musicale in Lyon (GRAME) from 1994 to 2012. He has a privileged artistic and recording collaboration with composers Jonathan Harvey, Robert Pascal, Jean-Marc Chouvel, Jesper Nordin, Benjamin Thigpen, Carlo Forlivesi, Nicolas Gilbert. He played «Time and Motion Study II» for cello and electronics by Brian Ferneyhough for the tribute concert to Pierre Boulez for his eightieth birthday in 2005 at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris. He became a consultant for the Pedagogy Department of IRCAM in Paris and director of a collection at Editions Jobert from 2002 to 2007. 

Today, as a professor at the Bordeaux Conservatory, his work focuses on the transmission and evolution of instrumental uses in contemporary music.
