Like "Cheminement" and "Mutances II", "Mutances III" was commissioned by Jean-Noël Crocq. A wish to exploit the resources of the instrument to the full is evident throughout. Rapid passages, sometimes including "slaps," sweep the whole piece forward in a multiplicity of rhythms, where groupings of two and three beats are superimposed or linked together to make bars of irregular length. This piece can be used for teaching at an advanced level, both for piano and for flute, or it can be played in concert. It can also be played by a clarinet in B flat.
