When I decided to write for the Bassoon quartet « Francs Bassons », I’ve had the image of a long way under the hot sun of west America. It’s probably the heat of this picture which drove me to work towards the water element !
After a short introduction, a first part begins with descendant scales like waves.
A second part is made of some trills which suggest shuddering water. Then the music becomes still with harmonic modulations.
The 3rd part starts again with the descendant and ascendant scales before the final firework which requires an impressive virtuosity from the musicians. I’ve really had no limit to use either the low or the high register thanks to the musicians: Their virtuosity was so brilliant and terrific!
SUMMER STREET is dedicated to the “Francs Bassons”.
The premiere is performed for the 2015 IDRS Congress in Tokyo.
