This concerto shows a bassoon in a rather relaxed, freedom-loving light. At the first movement, he is both facetious and whimsical sometimes even taking himself for a dancer. In the second movement, it is a lyrical and nostalgic loner, while in the third movement, it runs happily, accompanied by the maracas in a South American country. The bassoon is like a living character who gives the impression of wanting to break free from the mold of the traditional structure of the three movements of the concerto form.
