Édouard Souberbielle (1899-1986) was one of the great organists of his time and a teacher of considerable influence.

While he was in charge of the highest-level course at the École César Franck, he trained several of the most brilliant performers of the post-war era, especially Michel Chapuis, Francis Chapelet, André Isoir and, also, his own son, Léon Souberbielle, the author of a major work on the classical organ.

He was a man of great culture and huge breadth of mind, and an authority and writer on Gregorian Chant. His grandson, Alexis Galpérine, gives us an eye-witness account, enriched with unpuplished documents, of this fascinating, unjustly neglected musician, who crossed the paths of several of the greatest artists and writers of the period, including d'Indy, Vierne, Alain, Ravel, Duruflé, Messiaen, Poulenc, Viðès, Sauguet, Rouault, Jacques and Raïssa Maritain, and Léon Bloy, his brother-in-law...
