The confrontation between a solo string instrument and a large wind orchestra is certainly a hazardous challenge. Therefore the composer paid particular attention to the balance of sound masses while writing this work. The generous lyricism of the cello combines harmoniously with the clusters of sound colours of the wind instruments in the first and last movements ; only in the central movement the soloist seems to have to be crushed by the orchestral mass, but at the very end of the work that's the cello which has the last word.
