This, the first edition of the Sonata for cello and piano enables us to discover this beautiful piece of music in four movements which, like most of Mary Jaëll’s compositions, has remained unpublished until now.

The performances of this sonata by Jules Delsart in 1881 in Paris and, in the same period, by David Popper (Marie Jaëll played the piano part) testify to the interest the greatest cello players of that time took in this important work, whose style, so individual and mesmerizing, is closer to Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and Wagner than to the French composers.
