3 - CORTEGE AU CLAIR DE LUNE (2 min 50)
"This duo is extremely delicate. Both instruments sing, accompanies, so that the listener is transported in a pensive and peaceful atmosphere. It requires attention every minute. The changes of game modes, rhythms that intertwine, long held bows, breaks left hand, all this must be fluid to the atmosphere can be suspended."
Marjorie Pagès, Doublebassist
"The duo of Paul Sterne " Rêves Sélènes " is for me some descriptive music. The titles of the three movements, "Brumes”, “Feux Follets” and “Cortège au clair de lune" could be those of some paintings. One could draw a parallel between, for example, the initial pattern expressed by the cello (Contd. of semitones and thirds in legato triplets) and the "sfumato" of the great Italian painters (technical overlays layers to give a hazy appearance). This pattern designating the mist is then taken up by the doublebass and the cello again throughout the first movement.
The second movement is a great beauty in its colors and harmonic richness. I imagine an altarpiece whose heart would be the second movement, first and final may close as shutters to protect it. The piece doesn’t surrender at the first reading, musicians will need time to find the special atmosphere of this duo; many "effects” of sound help to strengthen the descriptive character of the piece. The title of the work gives us the reasons for this description: The dream, the moon ... is the idea of Schoenberg’s "Transfigured Night".
