E-SCORE PDF VERSION

The text of El Niño de Atocha (2011) was inspired by a confidence a young lady native of the Dominican Republic told the author. Like any young child on this Island, she used to be scared of witches and to pray El Niño de Atocha underneath the blanket of her child’s bed. This icon is a popular representation of the Christ Child sitting on a little throne, wearing a hat with a feather, holding a pilgrim’s staff with a flask and carrying a basket with bread. When she was 18, she left her family, her country and the weight of this syncretic Catholicism. Even if life has not been generous to her up to now, she does not regret to have left this little shepherd a bit kitsch and only misses her lost naïvety.

Two musical themes alternate with each other, the one like a popular lullaby, the other more rhythmic, each time built in a different way before finally overlapping each other and ending in a very virtuoso conclusion.

The world creation took place on 13 May 2012 in Brussels (Atelier Marcel Hastir) by Olivier Berten, Nedjelka Candina, Johan Fostier, Maria Helena Schoeps and Gilles Wiernik.
