C.M. 14/18 is an order placed by the 20/21 vocal ensemble, conducted by Cyrille Colombier. The piece has been created to be part of the VoCE (Voices from Citizens of Europe) project, which consists in a series of artistic events and human encounters taking place in parallel to the commemoration of the Great War.
The piece is built as the superimposition of two musical universes :
On the first hand, the « departure song » (« le chant du départ »), a triumphant war song, initially composed during the French Revolution and later sung during World War I by the french troops. The original song has been stretched and re-harmonized, in order to produce the effect of a throbbing recollection, still present, but that would have lost all of its original strength and power. On the other hand, words from french WWI soldiers, which prosody models on spoken language, and call in mind their life of misery, fear and nonsens during the fights.
Words from both texts influence each other and twist their meaning in a bitter counterpoint . The two musical worlds alter one another, but meet only at the end of the piece for the destructuring of the final « last post».
