Elegy is a substantial concert piece in three sections in which the flute and the organ are skilfully made to dialogue in a language that is predominantly chromatic but which also uses modal writing. The elevated sweeping nature of the material gives the piece its dramatic power. It is unusual in that the organ writing is on an equal footing with that of the flute and does not serve as a mere accompaniment.
