This method, based on Bach’s four-part chorale harmonizations, allows students to initiate themselves with the art of baroque counterpoint. To gain maximum profit, it is necessary to master certain notions of harmony (a level indicator would be the second cycle of écriture courses in French conservatories). This album bears the particularity of being conceived in the form of practical exercises with explanations. The principle is simple: we propose an example to be worked out with a guideline; then, on the back page, J. S. Bach’s own version is presented, rich with commentaries and a few references to other chorales.
