By definition even more constrained to monody than are the Sonatas & Partitas for solo violin and the Suites for solo cello, the single Partita for solo flute requires a maximum of harmonic extrapolation from the part of the harpsichord’s transcriber. But since Bach’s writing never in fact departs from it’s harmonic under workings, whatever the number of voices at play, what was left was to reconstitute these intentions within his own musical language.

The principle applied here was not to modify a single note of the original score (except for the necessary transposition from A minor to E minor), and to add harmonic and contrapuntal flesh in order to create a veritable Partita for the keyboard.

Jean Rondeau, a brilliant young harpsichordist (1er Prix de Bruges 2012), whom I taught composition during his years of study, is necessarily the dedicatee of this « reconstitution ». This piece is present on his premier CD Bach Imagine (Warner Classics Erato).
