The flute, viola and harp trio introduces a series of pieces of chamber music composed between 1999 and 2006. It aims to conjure up the pastoral atmosphere of the novel from which I drew my inspiration: L'Astré, by Honoré d'Urfé, written in the early 17th century.
Written for the unusual combination of organ, cello and harp, what is perhaps most striking about Invocation is the way it uses the simplest musical resources to create a striking effect on the listener. In the lyrical central section the cello indulges in its ability to sing. This section is flanked by two contrasted, much more earthbound sections in which the writing is modal and a generous melody stated by the cello is supported by the organ and punctuated by the harp.
