When I saw the opportunity to give the leadership to both wind instruments, I started to compose “Un, Deux, Beaucoup”. Not so many composers have been attracted by the expressive characteristics, voluptuous tune and rhythmical articulations of Oboe and French Horn in duet : The Oboe can bring powerful percussive incisions and the French Horn can be used for its strong accentuation effect and incantatory reinforcements.
These two majors elements naturally led me to the continent most concerned by rhythm : Africa.
No ethnic melody, no typical African rhythm but “Un, Deux, Beaucoup” suggests the beginning of counting in ancient tribes.
The piece is dedicated to Daniel Catalanotti. For the 2016 French Horn Association Congress, he offered me the Premiere with Alexandre Collar, Horn, Baptiste Gibier, Oboe and Mathilde Nguyen, Piano.
