The piece is based on a traditional Irish slip jig. Three pairs of instruments (2 descant recorders, 2 flutes or recorders (treble or tenor), 2 violins) share the melody whilst the others punctuate this with chords, usually in syncopated fourths or fifths, to create a bourdon effect. The cello and double bass (ad lib.) support the whole piece with a simple rhythmic bass line, sometimes bowed, sometimes pizzicato.
