Edition directed by Michèle Castellengo and Hugues Genevois
This book gathers together the conference proceedings of the Fifth Conference on Interdisciplinary Musicology (CIM09). This conference, which took place in Paris (/France) from 26th to -29th October 2009, was organised by Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Université Paris Sorbonne-Paris IV, Cité de la Musique, and Musée du Quai Branly, with the support of the Société Française d'Acoustique. As an essential tool to produce musical sounds, a musical instrument is a concentrate of know-how, intimately linked to a music style, a society, a period. Intrinsically cultural, this object has nevertheless to meet ergonomic constraints and perceptual and aesthetic demands. Even if, across centuries, some instruments have disappeared and some others have appeared or been transformed, the possibilities offered nowadays by the digital technologies oblige us to rethink the concept of instrument. This present book deals with the question of the connections between music and the singular objects that produce it.
