Texts gathered, translated and introduced by Max Noubel
Elliott Carter (1908-2012) celebrated his 100th birthday in December 2008. This collection of essays includes a selection of papers presented at the International Conference Bridges toward America II which took place at that time in Paris (Ircam) to pay tribute to the great American composer.
Hommage à Elliott Carter includes twelve articles and an interview. It brings together several generations of musicologists from different countries. The first part discusses musical writing and compositional strategies, including Carter’s conception of instrumental relations. The fondamental question of the perception of this highly elaborated music is also discussed.
The second part contains studies on time conception and pitch organisation. A pedagogical approach to a Carter’s piece precedes the last section where Carter’s work and aesthetics are placed in their historical context.
The book concludes by giving voice to a famous performer of Carter’s music.
