Horae Volubiles was commissioned by the Tomassinni Competition, in Petritoli, Italy. The piece takes its inspiration from a painting, the Virgin in the Rose Garden, attributed to Stefano da Giovanni, known as Stefano da Verona (15th century.
Horae Volubiles, a poetic work which blends together some very disparate material (including bird calls, Gregorian chant and virtuoso passage work), explores new playing techniques while expanding, to the fullest extent, the usual scope of a piece for solo oboe.
