E-SCORE PDF VERSION

This three-part piece was composed and created at the Dijon Cathedral in 2010 for the tercentennial of the birth of the famous Burgundy-based organ builder, Karl-Joseph RIEPP. Karl-Joseph RIEPP was born in 1710 in Eldern, a Swabian town attached to the Ottobeuren Abbey and died in Dijon in 1775.

Practising his organ-building skills, he was also a wine merchant! He achieved for the Benedictine Saint-Bénigne Abbey, now a cathedral, the biggest of his instruments, equipped with a 24-foot Montre on the front. This organ, now totally rebuilt by Gerhard SCHMID, organ builder in Kaufbeuren in Bavaria, retains, despite the passage of time, the indelible imprint of its genius designer. It is epitomised by the splendid case of the purest Louis XV-style that arises, in all its original magnificence, at the top of the nave. Its supreme elegance, only challenged by its own sound, allows the musician to express the huge musical panel from the 18th century to our days.

Hence, this three-part piece, written on the five notes of the name “RIEPP” is highly inspired by the actual instrument and all its colouring resources.

The prelude, exposing the theme fortissimo, plays a short fugued passage (Fonds calmes) followed by a rhythmic development (Mutations et Anches étroites) and a final recapitulation by augmentation (Grand Plenum). The Aria sets itself, at first, as an echoing rhythmic recitative (Cornets) then melodic (Anche soliste) contrasted with a slow Sicilian on the Celestial Voice. The finale is a long development of repetitive character and marcato on a Fonds et Anches/Récit ostinato concluding on a powerful fortissimo recapitulation on Pedal into a decrescendo. The last sequence of this movement borrows an agitated litanic function, rhythmic and crescendo outlining, in bars 50, 52, 54 and 56, a well-known tune from the Burgundian vinous folklore. The Tutti of the instrument sounds mightily for the last time the name of “R-I-E-P-P”.
