The Prologue et Noël Varié arose from a commission for a test piece for the finals of the Jean-Louis Florentz Competition in 2007. Its form (theme and variations) is strongly classical and there is nothing revolutionary about its musical language. The character of the piece derives directly from the composer's own concert improvisations. The theme is a genuine French Christmas Carol, ("Noël, Cette Journée) which Louis-Claude Daquin (1694-1772) used in his Noël IV (published in 1757). The Prologue hints at the theme before it is actually heard, harmonized in four parts in a modal manner. Six variations follow, alternating between fast and slow tempi and seeking to demonstrate the various colours of the instrument.
