Partita sur un choral de Michel Chapuis for organ

In this set of variations, which are written in a classical, rather Germanic, style (with a nod towards France in the fugue) I wanted to do homage to the extraordinary organist whose work on the French and German repertoires of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was of such excellence and who was, during the 1960s, the leader of the school of young French organists who, we must not forget, were responsible for the great revival of organ playing, and to whom we owe so much, both in organ playing and organ building.

I witnessed this period. I had the extreme good fortune to be taught by Michel Chapuis and to be his assistant at Saint-Séverin, as well as being assistant to Francis Chapelet and Jean Boyer, the two other organists of the famous instrument, before being appointed Organist of the Madeleine in 1979.

To those who play this piece, I wish as much pleasure in performing it as I had in writing it.
