Composed at the conclusion of a recital in April 2004 in the Alpe d'Huez, the Variations on a Welsh Melody are a sort of winking hommage to the improvisations Pierre Cochereau would offer during his concerts.
Here F.H. Houbart has composed a work comprised of 7 variations in the French style reminiscent of the school of Dupré, using mostly canons, and concluding with a brilliant and energetic toccata.
He borrows certain registrations, harmonies, and "recipes" of his teacher in addition to his architectural plan. The original melody, "Llef," is a Welsh hymn composed in 1890 by G.H. Jones.
