It is useful to point out that Maurice Emmanuel (1862-1938) was Choirmaster at the Basilica of Sainte Clotilde in Paris from 1904 to 1907, while Charles Tournemire was Organist of the Grand Organ there. Unlike Tournemire, who imposed on himself the discipline of assigning each Mass of L'Orgue Mystique [The Mystical Organ] to a particular feast or Sunday in the liturgical calendar, Emmanuel did not intend his Messe pour Grand Orgue [Mass for Grand Organ] for a specific day. Maurice Emmanuel's Messe pour Grand Orgue, as revised, annotated and registered in this edition, enriches the repertoire of the organ and belongs to the French Twentieth-Century school.
