The « Trois Danses Macabres » were commissioned by the municipality of Charleville-Mézières to commemorate the five-hundredth anniversary of the Basilico of Mézières. Capable of being performed as a cycle or separately, they respond to one another through multiple cross-references and the use of often similar musical materials.
On a symbolic level, the three pieces are to be seen in the light of the « danses macabres » that haunted the painters of the late Middle Ages, as well as the episodes of the famous « Legend of the Three Dead and the Three Living », very popular from the 13th to the 15th centuries, which can be read ad libitum by a narrator or a storyteller.
The « Trois Danses Macabres » were recorded by Pascale Rouet (Musiques en miroirs, Triton 331211, 2017)
