Inspired by the episode of the abandonment of Hagar and Ishmael by Abraham (Genesis, XVI), reported by Tabari in his Chronicle, this piece, conceived as a chaconne, evokes in its seven variations the wanderings of Hagar who went in search of water in the desert: "Thus she went up seven times to the hills of Zafa and Merwa. Ishmael began to weep, as children do when they are without their mother; and when he struck his heel, a spring appeared under his foot." In the end, the miracle occurs, making the spring emerge under Ishmael's foot...

True to the "wax and gold" technique used by Jean-Louis Florentz in his works, consisting of superimposing different levels of meaning, the piece also refers by its title to the eponymous piece by Bernard-Marie Koltès, while echoing Messiaen's advice to Florentz to "return as often as possible to your African deserts."
