During his short-lived career as an organist, Beethoven, just like Mozart before him, did not write anything for the organ except a short fugue of no importance as well as two "circular" preludes, as they are commonly referred to, which remind us of Jean Denis's "Prelude to check if the chord is right throughout." (1650) Therefore the three pieces presented here came into being quite unexpectedly in 1799.

They were meant for a small cylinder organ in the cabinet of automata owned by Count Joseph Deym-Müller for whom Mozart had worked eight years before. Written on four staves, the piece is worth being reduced and even slightly altered so as to make it easier to play on a medium-sized organ.
