E-SCORE PDF VERSION

This sonata and the 14th were composed in January 2011 in response to a suggestion from my friend Nicolas Bacri. The latter, interested by the presentation of my twelve first sonatas by musicologists Philippe Malhaire, Ludovic Florin, Lionel Pons and Mireille Tendero and published to editions Delatour, opuscule in which I proposed my own definition of the sonata, suggested me to write two contrasting sonatas, one in a classical form, the other in a very free way.

This Sonata No. 13 can indeed be analysed as Vincent d'Indy would have done for a sonata by Beethoven. My purpose not being to fill a prefigured musical form, it was indifferent for me to adopt one arbitrarily since only the musical thought had to give life to the work.

Indeed, one can find in this one the three usual parts of the Mozartian sonata, and within each part thematic material subject to developments. Who cares? if these constraints stimulate imagination. In the slow movement, a play upon contrary motion gives to the same rêveur motif unexpected poetical utterance.
