Ten grimaces for piano is a tribute to Prokofiev in several respects: the title of the collection is a reference to Sarcasms, op. 17, and the spirit of the pieces is the one of the Soviet Prokofiev who tries, not really successfully, to alleviate the humour and the irony characteristic of his whole work.
These are pedagogic pieces, written for grade 7-8, which gives young pianists the opportunity to express a range of non-conformist traits often prized by teenagers: mockery, ridicule, dark moods, dry tone... and the naivety of a Peter and the Wolf pastiche that concludes the cycle in the final “bow out”.
