Following Schumann, and without wanting to imitate him, here are a few pieces that the world of children inspired me. The “Berceuse” (Lullaby) is formed by a theme and 4 variations; it seems to translate life from inside the womb till birth. Before entering the main stage of Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw in 1982, I was as usual improvising, thinking of my four-year old daughter Hélène; “La Comptine” (the Nursery Rhyme) is the shaping of this improvisation. “ La Rêverie du Petit Soldat (de bois!)” (The (wooden!) Little Soldier’s Daydream) is a piece that can be played by a very young (but talented!) pianist. The children’s wondrous gaze on the Christmas tree, promise of happiness, inspired me this short piece. “L’ Enfantine” (The Childish) and «l’Adolescente” (The Juvenile), following the great Couperin, evoke the charms of innocence and of first youth.
