This work was commissioned by the pianist Nima Sarkéchik in the context of the Triton label recording of the complete works for piano by the German composer Johannes Brahms. In 2014, I was asked to compose a 4-to-5-minute piano work as a tribute to Hamburg’s genius. The challenge was finding a way to link two such different musical universes. To start with, I thought about the way Brahms uses the piano : extreme registers, certain arpeggios or even a reference to the Viennese waltz he so loved. So it is that some passages are reminiscent of the famous opus 49 Lullaby, or even the 4-handed piano waltzes. The title of Passacaglia should not be overlooked because it conjures up the structure of a Theme and Variations which is very present in the composer’s works. This piece is dedicated to Nima Sarkéchik who commissioned it.
