DISTANCES is an enigmatic work from which a near permanent polyphony emerges from the very rich harmony. One can hear the influence of American composers, but contrary to what appears in many of the "minimalist" movement pieces, Noel LEE uses cells here or rather bright and elaborate features. One can feel his intention to highlight the opposition between an expressiveness and a kind of "lively technical implementation" by the particularly varied pianistic sonority. After the composer's passing away I have seen to the publishing of this work and I have taken it upon myself to correct some obvious mistakes in the original score.
