Since 1990 Mashayekhi has been writing besides atonal and multicultural pieces, compositions inspired by Persian music for piano. These compositions have been very successful and have been performed frequently in Iran as well as in Europe and the USA. Mashayekhi used his "Complementary Theory" (a modal supplement to classical harmony and baroque counterpoint) to write these pieces. Because of the wide scale of technical challenges addressed in these pieces, "Persian Gardens" has also been used for educational purposes.
