This precious and moody Waltz is a nod to a major genre of 19th and 20th century piano music, both a parody and a tribute (to Chopin, to Poulenc). In accordance with its title, it presents a variety of characters that alternate in a simple arch form (ABCBA), by turns distinguished (precious) and slightly melancholic, but also capricious and playful, then dark and more agitated. This light, tonal work could make a fine examination piece.
