The work was composed between 2010 and 2011 after watching a particularly spectacular mauve and purple sunset, set on a pale blue background. Of course, my imagination led me to try to conjure up a more tormented sky, with grey clouds, gentle rain and even storms. However, as I gazed into the sky I was plunged into the theological question of the existence of God. But how could I transpose these questions into music? It seemed to me that the inclusion of Gregorian chant (neumes I had created or extracts from In Paradisum) was the best way to convey listening to these questions. In ancient Greek syn and phone mean union and sound (origins of the word symphony). In instrumental composition, the string quartet is written as a single instrument, which is “embraced” by the piano and the use of the pedals, hence the unification.
