Argiles is built in two part : first a slow melody with a lot of ornaments and melismas, then a very rthmic music with many accents which give to the phrases an irregular form. Although it is on a strict tempo, the first part tries to hide it, when using many irregular tuplets (quintolets, different triplets, etc...) which are linked together or mixed. That sounds like a non-measured music. Second part is really different : rythmical and fast, it seems to be sometimes like a scansion but there is a great diversity of the lengths of different groups of notes.
This piece exists in three versions : alto recorder (the original one), flute, and soprano saxophone.
