The structure of this string quartet is a vast arch in which six sections are linked. These ones are very contrasted in tempo, musical colours and atmospheres. Nevertheless, by hearing this work, its underliying unity appears clearly, and it has to sound as a « symphonic poem for string quartet » rather than a traditional score cast in many movements. What is fundamentally part of the requirements of chamber music in this quartet, is the dense and demanding polyphony which prevails from beginning to end.
