The title of this work comes from a sentence found in a novel by Hermann Hesse, "Knulp". It evokes the vast open spaces in the sky, between the moving clouds. Musically, there are many linked sections of different moods (extatic, jubilant, mysterious) played by the organ, in which the trumpet flies as a free bird or a pure spirit.
