Amara is the Latin for « bitterness ». Echoing the words of Khalil Gibran placed as an epigraph, the piece is intended to express a feeling of sweet sadness recalling some happy and yet vanished past. The beautiful sound of the viola – both warm and sad – is the perfect one to sing this kind of elegy, hesitating between pain and tenderness. The work opens with a heartbreaking and almost sobbing song. The second part is a melodic line, like a smile among tears. Then the first song is back, reaching an irate climax and finally leading to a sweet and bitter conclusion (major/minor).
