E-SCORE PDF VERSION

The sonata for violin and cello was written in 2012 for the Swedish violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and Finnish cellist Raitinen Katti, who gave the first performance of the piece that same year. The sonata could be subtitled "Scenes from a marriage", in reference to the work of Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman, with its dialogue between two characters, one feminine (violin) and the other masculine (cello). During this dialogue, with its agreements and differences of opinion, some themes flow between the two instruments whilst others are unique to each musician. By a curious and quite involuntary coincidence, the theme of the variations which constitute the last part of this work corresponds to the opening motif of Richard Wagner’s opera "Tristan and Isolde"...
