The idea of this Stabat Mater came to me from reading this beautiful Latin text of the thirteenth century.
The return of rhyme in these twenty stanzas of three lines, a certain rhythm in these stanzas: All this led me to recite the text in a litany way, like an incantationin in a brief format of few minutes, unlike many works based on this most famous text which are quite developed. I also wanted to write a work accessible, with simple harmonies, and vocal lines that touch easily. This is important for a composer to write works within the reach of many people.
This Stabat Mater was the last polyphonic work to be sung before the fire of Notre-Dame de Paris, April 15, 2019.
The organ part being difficult, this score contains also an easier version, at the request of the organist Yves Castagnet, from Notre-Dame de Paris.
